2,405 citations and counting...

Crystal Structure of Rhodopsin: A G Protein-Coupled Receptor is making headlines...or rather, footnotes. It is currently ranked as the 5th most cited article in Biology and BioChemistry. This paper was originally published by our very own chair, Dr. Palczewski in the August 4, 2000 issue of Science. The heavy citations represent the groundbreaking work that Dr. Palczewski has accomplished in his career and we congratulate him on having such an influential publication.

Dr. Taylor joins the faculty

Dr. Taylor will join the faculty as an Assistant Professor in August. Derek Taylor received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 2003 where he was trained in molecular and structural virology in Dr. John (Jack) Johnson's laboratory. For his thesis work, Derek worked on non-enveloped RNA viruses as model systems for viral assembly, maturation, and infection. The work concentrated specifically on characterizing a pH-dependent, maturational cleavage event, and in determining the atomic structure, using X-ray crystallography, of various viral capsids within the tetravirus family. In 2004, Dr. Taylor began an HHMI post-doctoral fellowship at the Wadsworth Center under the tutelage of Dr. Joachim Frank (now at Columbia University). During the fellowship, Derek used cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and single particle image reconstruction to visualize eukaryotic ribosomes, stalled at various physiological stages, at sub-nanometer resolution. In 2008, Derek spent a year with Dr. Tom Cech at the University of Colorado at Boulder working on telomeric complex structure and assembly, which he continues to investigate.

Dr. Moiseenkova-Bell joins the faculty

Dr. Moiseenkova-Bell will join the faculty at Case in the summer of 2009 as Assistant Professor of Pharmacology. Dr. Moiseenkova-Bell graduate and postdoctoral training have been in membrane protein structure-functional analysis, with an emphasis on TRP (transient receptor potential) channels that play an important role in signal transduction pathways for pain and temperature sensation. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 2004, where she worked in Dr. Burgess Christensen’s laboratory concentrating on the structural and functional analysis of temperature receptors in reptiles and mammals. During her training, she succeeded in the overexpression and purification of the TRP channels using the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae and showed that this method can produce pure TRPV1 channel suitable for structural work. That same year, she joined Dr. Theodore Wensel’s laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine, where she continued her work on TRP channels structure determination and solved the first three-dimensional structure of the TRPV1 channel using cryo-electron microscopy and single particles reconstruction. Dr. Moiseenkova-Bell published research papers in journals such as PNAS, Journal of General Physiology, American Journal of Physiology, Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications.

Graduate Student Efforts Feed the Hungry:
Appreciation goes out to the graduate students of the Department of Pharmacology who collected 108 food items and $164 during the CWRU Graduate Student Senate (GSS) annual Food Drive. This is the third consecutive year that the Department of Pharmacology has earned the distinction of being the most generous during this annual event and has been honored with a financial prize from the GSS. At the suggestion of the students, the department fully supported the additional donation of this prize to the Cleveland Food Bank. The Cleveland Food Bank is one of the largest charities in Northern Ohio and potentially the largest metropolitan foodbank in the country. The
Cleveland Foodbank supplies food for use in local soup kitchens, shelters and food pantries, child-care centers, group homes and programs for the elderly. For every $1 donation, the Foodbank is able to distribute enough food to prepare four nutritious meals for the hungry in the Cleveland area. The financial contributions received from the Department of Pharmacology alone will supply over 1800 meals.
